The Modern Day SMAS Facelift
Napa Valley, California- Facelift techniques have evolved over the years. The latest great advance in facelift surgical techniques is the "modern day" SMAS facelift. The acronym SMAS stands for Superficial muscular aponeurotic system. This firm facial layer of tissue is below the facial skin and and fatty layer. The picture below shows a firm tissue layer which is being pulled, this is the SMAS layer.
The SMAS layer is the frame work or foundation of the facial skin. This layer is pulled and anchored in the proper direction for a natural look. The SMAS layer is much stronger than skin which streches easily. The SMAS is obviously attached to the skin so when it is pulled the skin is likewise pulled. This also avoids putting much pull tension on the skin and , therefore, heals much better. The below photo are two patients of Dr. Miguel Delgado who have had SMAS facelifts.
